All tools and materials will be provided. Your collage can be abstract or figurative. Bring a design or sketch with you or let yourself be inspired by the boxes of flattened tin on hand. Safety and fun are emphasized. Moderate hand strength and vision are needed. When a friend told me about tinsmithing classes at the JC Campbell Folk School I went and learned some traditional tinsmithing techniques- cups, sconces, candle holders etc. Five years or so later I went back to take a class called Tin Can Art with Bobby Hansson and began working with repurposed tin cans. In Bobby's book 'The Fine Art of the Tin Can' one of the featured artists was making tin can collages which intrigued me. In 2014 around the time I was retiring from the practice of psychiatry I learned that Robert Villamagna was teaching a Tin Can Collage Class at Pocosin Arts. I took the class and began making tin can collages . I enjoyed this and other people liked my work enough to pay for it. I do lots of birds because I love them but equally enjoy making abstract collages. I began teaching Tin Can Collage classes as a requirement for having a one person show at the Hiddenite Center. Since getting over my terror of teaching I have taught a number of times and find that I enjoy it. Each class is different and I am always learning new things from my students. I regularly sell my tin stuff at the Saxapahaw Holiday Market and the Fearrington Folk Art Show. Occasionally I have my work in local galleries.
