Welcome to the latest installment series for Saxy a Go Go--meet the vendor/maker! We want you to get to know our incredibly creative and funky community of vendors & makers, so we've asked them to answer a few questions for us. This week, our newest vendor: BrnBurn Studio.
What inspires your art?
I think the world needs more pottery that we can enjoy and smile at. I draw from my love for adorable mascots, 90s cartoons, and maximalism.
How does Saxapahaw influence your art?
Saxpahaw feels like a little tucked away gem of awesome and weird. I am loving it more and more as I meet the people and get to know the local shops. I would say it inspires me to keep being authentic!
If you were to speak for your art how would you fill in these prompts?
I feel ... that world needs more positivity, but also here to support any girlies in their "villain era" (saying "no").
I need ... to keep making with my hands.
I am ... an artist that wants to keep showing the world that you can make, draw, express how you feel. That is what it is to be human! Embrace it!!!!
What’s your favorite tool and why?
My homemade carving tool is my favorite. My late Grandpa gave me some Dremel bits that I fashioned into little tools. He always said "You only are as good as your tools!" I like to think he cheers me on sometimes when I draw on my work.
What’s one thing that someone who isn’t a ceramicist wouldn’t know about what you do?
I spend more time doing cleaning than making pots.
What idea or concept are you chewing on right now? Has it shown up in your work yet?
Right now I am playing with making a style that captures the vibe of precolonial Filipino imagery but with new symbols. So in the Philippines they have symbols for birds, centipedes, grain, etc. I want to make some new symbols of what I see around here in North Carolina and bridge the gap with this icon language.
Are you a rebel with your art in any way? How does that make it better?
My pots are sometimes a little unapologetic. They may have messages that say "Heck No" or some expletives. It's a subtle way to tell people to bug off with a pot cause sometimes it's hard to actually say.
